Are Your S.M.A.R.T. Goals Really Smart?

Are Your S.M.A.R.T. Goals Really Smart?

As we step into the exciting process of breaking down next year’s company targets into business unit, department, team, and personal goals, let us be smart about our S.M.A.R.T. activities.

If you have ever experienced KPI overkill or S.M.A.R.T. goal setting processes that simply re-wrote the status quo, you know what I mean.

Effective KPIs and S.M.A.R.T. goals serve as road signs that help us and others understand where we are in our growth journey. They also help us operationally define our success, so we can celebrate rather than debate whether we were successful or not.

Remember that s.m.a.r.t. is smart when it:

-moves your business forward.

-leads to a constructive stretch for you, one that enables you to improve.

-impacts and improves the customer experience in a positive way.

-provides an improvement or positive step change to the situation at hand.

How do you ensure that your kpi and smart goal experiences create a real result and aren’t simply an exercise in reformulation?
